Peter Brautigam focuses on estate planning and transactional tax law planning designed to minimize income and wealth transfer taxes. His practice includes developing and implementing individual estate plans for medium and large estates, drafting wills, revocable "living" trusts, Alaska Community Property, life insurance trusts, Alaska Asset Protection trusts, and other sophisticated estate planning techniques; administering probate and trust estates; transactional tax planning for individuals and businesses (buy-sell agreements, ESOPS, etc.); non-qualified deferred compensation planning and rabbi trusts; and, the formation and structuring of corporations, family limited partnerships and limited liability companies. He has a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Taxation and began practicing in 1985. Peter is a Fellow and past state chair of the AMERICAN COLLEGE OF TRUST & ESTATE COUNSEL (www.actec.org), a select group of attorneys who are nationally recognized in the practice of estate planning, probate and trust law. Peter was born and raised in Anchorage, is married, has two children, and is active in his local church, ChangePoint.

Mr. Mahoney joined the Firm Of Counsel in 2007. Before joining the firm, Mr. Mahoney was Of Counsel to the law firm of Hughes Bauman Pfiffner Gorski & Seedorf, LLC. Prior to that he had a distinguished career as in-house tax counsel for multinational corporations, most recently, VP & General Tax Officer, ARCO Alaska, Inc. His practice area currently focuses on income tax and property tax controversy resolution, non-profit law, and entity formation/governance; LLCs, partnerships, and corporations.

He has also been affiliated with Foraker Group since its inception in 2000. His consultancy with Foraker centers on the business, governance, and tax related operating issues facing non-profits. This work includes education regarding formation, corporate documentation, corporate governance, interrelationships with the Internal Revenue Service, and the design of gifts and expectancies by planned giving. He is a Certified Public Accountant.

Mr. Mahoney has presented before the US Treasury, the Alaska Legislature and Agencies and has argued cases on behalf of his clients before various state courts and the United States Tax Court. He is a frequent facilitator of strategic and business planning with Boards of Directors and speaker in Continuing Education Programs related to nonprofit corporation operations, Sarbanes-Oxley and corporate governance, as well as corporate, LLC, and partnership formation issues.

Jane Sauer has been a business attorney in Alaska since 1987. She focuses on commercial transactions, business planning and general corporate law. Her clients include companies in the medical, seafood processing, construction, real estate, food service and other industries, and Alaska Native corporations. Jane negotiates and drafts numerous contracts including stock and asset purchase and sale agreements, real estate contracts and leases, LLC operating agreements, and a wide variety of other agreements. She advises and handles legal matters on the numerous issues encountered by companies doing business in Alaska, including regulatory compliance, employer obligations, tax and securities laws, and other issues.

CHARLES F. SCHUETZE


CHARLES F. SCHUETZE


Charles F. Schuetze practices in the areas of business transactions, reorganizations and tax planning for limited liability companies and corporations, estate tax planning, and representation of taxpayers before the IRS, the U.S. Tax Court and the U.S. District Court. Born and raised in the Midwest, Mr. Schuetze acquired his bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Cornell College in 1977, and his law degree from the University of Iowa in 1982. He was awarded the Exchange Scholarship between the University of Iowa and the University of Tübingen, studied law in Germany at the University of Tübingen, and worked for several months in the law department of the Dresdner Bank in Frankfurt, Germany. In 1990, Mr. Schuetze obtained his master’s degree in taxation from the University of Miami, with a master’s thesis on family deferred payment sales transactions (later expanded by his thesis advisers into a series of articles, the first presented to the Twenty-Sixth Annual Heckerling Institute on Estate Planning). Mr. Schuetze began private practice in Anchorage, Alaska in 1984, at first working in the areas of income taxation, business organizations, and estate planning. He participated in drafting the legislation enabling the organization of LLCs in Alaska, testified before the legislature in its behalf, and spoke at many seminars on Alaska LLC legislation. Mr. Schuetze is the chair of the Tax Section of the Alaska Bar Association and member of the Anchorage Estate Planning Council. In his spare time, Mr. Schuetze enjoys large format landscape photography, various cultural activities, cross-country skiing, biking and hiking.
